24 FEBRUARY: DAY OF THE NATIONAL FLAG
(As Mexican MUST know and learn our history)

During the beginning of the War of Independence, and although was never formally adopted, many historians consider the first national flag the banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe used by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla during the "El Grito de Dolores" on September 16, 1810. This standard became the primary symbol of the insurgent army during the War of Independence.

For 1813, the insurgent forces designed another national anthem, a flag of white silk, bordered by a border of blue and white, mounted in the center of an eagle perched on a cactus bearing a crown imperial. Circling the Shield was read a legend in Latin that read: "oculis et unguibus asque victrix" which means "With the eyes and nails, also victorious. "insurgent army also used a flag with the white, blue and red vertical stripes.

The First National Flag was officially adopted in 1821, the first year of sovereignty recognized. The government then chose the Mexican Empire tricolor of green, white and red with the national emblem in the center. The official decree stated that:
"Article one: (...) the national flag and the army will be tricolor, taking forever green, white and Incarnate vertically, with a crowned eagle in the center of the white stripe, according to the following design ...

Although the eagle on the shield is similar to that used today, that of 1821 did not have a snake in its beak and presents a crown, which represents the rule. This flag was officially declared by Agustin Iturbide on November 2, 1821 and was officially used since July 1822. Fell into disuse after the abolition of the empire.

In the year 1823 to the fall of Iturbide, Congress decided how taxpayer must be the flag of Mexico. The new design stirred the crown of the head of the eagle, in addition to adding the snake, a branch of olive and laurel, tradition is still preserved in the current flag. Its use was discontinued in 1864 due to a dissolution of the federal republic.

The Third National Flag was officially the Second Mexican Empire. Again, the color pattern used was the tricolor green, white and red with the coat of arms holding the center white stripe. However, the proportion of the flag was changed from 4:7 to 1:2, and each crowned four eagles were placed in the corners of the flag. The design of the shield, ordered by Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico, was designed to resemble the French Imperial Shield, but with a Mexican flair.
The flag fell into disuse in 1867 when Maximilian was overthrown and executed by the federal army. Then, Porfirio Diaz ordered the red eagle head and with outstretched wings.

Since everyone had a different idea of \u200b\u200bhow it should be the shield, Venustiano Carranza decided that the eagle are colored left side and retained the features that the Mexica had conceived when they discovered the land where he founded Tenochtitlan.

Since February 24, 1937 publicly commemorated the day of Show at the monument of General Vicente Guerrero, who was the first Mexican military pledged to the flag, in the event known as the embrace of Acatempan, 12 March 1821.

The current flag, called the Fourth National Flag was adopted by decree on September 16, 1968, and was confirmed by law on February 24, 1984. The version used today is an adaptation of the design approved in 1916 by decree of President Venustiano Carranza, where the eagle was changed profile facing left profile.

One possible reason for the redesign of the Fourth National Flag in 1968 was that Mexico City was host of the Games of the XIX Olympiad. In the same period, the Tricolor flag without the coat which was used by Mexico as its emblem merchant was legally abandoned. The reason was that without the national emblem, the flag was the same as Italian. In 1984 there was a debate about how it should be shown the shield on the back of the flag. To resolve this problem, a deputy of the National Action Party proposed a change to the law governing the use of the flag, to allow the eagle right profile to be shown on the back of the national flag.

MEXICO FLAG The flag of Mexico is a tricolor rectangle divided into three equal stripes of green, white and red. Charged with the national emblem in the center, in the white strip in which a Mexican golden eagle devouring a snake with claws maintains sustained, standing on a cactus on a small island.
Their length-width ratio is four to seven (4:7).
The current flag was officially adopted in 1968, but the overall design has been used since 1821 when first national flag was created.
Since 1984 there is a law that governs and regulates the use of the national flag named "National Symbols Act." MEANING OF COLORS

The colors of the flag originated from the flag of the Army of the Three Guarantees, which lasted from 1821 to 1823. Originally, the meaning of the colors were:

Verde: Independence (from Spain). White
: Religion (religion, Roman Catholicism). Red
: Union (between Europeans and Americans.)
The meaning was changed due to the secularization of the country, led by then President Benito Juárez. The new meaning of the colors was:

Green Hope.
White: Unity.
Red: The blood of heroes. DESIGN

The official design of the flag of Mexico is stipulated in Article 3 of the "Law on the Coat of Arms, Flag and National Anthem" that dictates the proportions and measures of what should be the flag.

3: "The National Flag is a rectangle divided into three vertical stripes of identical measures, with the colors in the following order from the flagpole: blue, white and red. In the white stripe and the center has the national emblem, with a diameter of three quarters of width of the strip. The ratio of width and length of the flag is four to seven. It may take a bond or tie of the same colors at the bottom of the spearhead.

SHIELD The shield is positioned in the center of the white band and is inspired by the ancient Aztec legend about the foundation of Mexico-Tenochtitlan. Legend has it that the Aztecs lived quietly in Aztlán, when their chief god called "Huitzilopochtli" spoke with the priests and told them to leave Aztlan had to find a new land where they would have wealth, power and where a new town would be born, and that posing when they found an eagle on a cactus devouring a snake had reached the promised land, after approximately 302 years found the signal and then founded Tenochtitlan and thus, this event is considered the foundation of Mexico, and its importance was adopted as a symbol of national emblem. The current design of the seal was created by Francisco Eppens Helguera and approved by President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz.
